How to send a parcel to an Erasmus student abroad

How to send a parcel to someone studying abroad: the right address for halls or a shared flat, the recipient's phone number and what to pack.

Guides ·

Winter clothes, books, a present from home: sending a parcel to someone studying abroad is easy, but the address must be written correctly, because parcels easily go astray in student halls and shared flats.

1. The full address

Write the student’s name as it appears on the doorbell or letterbox, then street, house number, postcode and city. In student halls, add the name of the residence and the room number; in a shared flat, the staircase, the floor or the name of the person who lives there (for example “c/o Smith”). Check the address in the confirmation email: after payment you have 30 minutes to correct it yourself.

2. The recipient’s phone number

A phone number with the international dialling code is required: the courier uses it to notify or find the recipient. Best to give the number the student actually uses abroad.

3. Someone needs to be in

Delivery is to the door: ask the student when they will be at home, or whether the residence has a reception that accepts parcels. They can also follow the parcel with the order code or the tracking number (track your parcel).

4. What to pack

Clothes, books and household items are fine. No perishable food, loose lithium batteries, flammable liquids or other prohibited goods (the list). Pack carefully, especially books: they are heavy and break flimsy boxes (how to pack).

5. How much it costs

The price is fixed per parcel and depends only on the route, up to 30 kg: a full parcel costs the same as a light one. See the prices and book.
